ABOUT US

The Raven’s Glass Pub is considered a bit of a quirky place, established in a repurposed repair garage on a lot of land first built on in 1889. The Downtown Asheville Pub is reminiscent of a classic English pub, an homage to the homeland of the couple who’d restored the building a decade earlier.

Owner Alfred Dymand, is the mastermind behind the redesign, He called his labor of love The Raven’s Glass.  The shingle hanging out front displaying a Raven sitting on the handle of a magnifying glass.

This paying tribute to Dymand’s years spent as a guard at the Tower of London, and later as a London Metro Police Officer and an Inspector at Scotland Yard.

Ravens had been housed at the Tower for centuries and required a constant keeper to ensure none escaped. As the old adage warns, “If the Tower of London ravens are lost or fly away, the Crown will fall and Britain with it.”

Dymand has also given the pub his own personal touches, like the antique mail boxes that lined the wall of the anteroom. Many of the regulars have claimed their own boxes in which to stash a personal shot glass, mug, or coffee cup, although Dymand had in fact intended for bar-goers to stow their cell phones away so as not to be distracted by technology in a place meant for socializing.

Dymand has taken the use of cell phones and technology in his Pub very serious. On more than one occasion had insisted on users vacate his business or put the phone up.

The wood paneling of the great room also hides several layers of chicken wire as does the celling.  This itself makes getting a cell signal in the great room next to impossible.

A pub is for socializing, enjoying music, conversation and storytelling.  Not for phone and computer use according to Dymand and his wife who runs the kitchen that produces its renowned sandwiches and meals.
